Summer Skills Day Camp: Wednesdays Throughout the Summer
All summer long, on Wednesdays from 10am-3pm, drop-in with Dawn in her making camp. We will make shoes, pelts, gourd bowls, blackberry pie and much, much more. See below for details. Sign up for as many or as few Wednesdays as works for your summer schedule.
June 19: Whittle All The Day. Campers will use instructor provided carving knives to harvest and shape wood into decorative and useful objects. We may make a walking stick, a spoon, an animal decoration or any variety of beginner to intermediate whittling projects. Date: Wednesday, June 19. 10am - 3pm. Fees: $100 per day includes supplies. Ages: 9+, Maximum enrollment of 7 campers for this camp.
June 26: Animal Skins. Preserving the skins and pelts of animals is an ancient tradition for human beings. On our animal skins day, campers will learn how to skin, flesh and hand soften a small pelt. Each camper will go home with his or her own mole, squirrel or part of a rabbit skin. Date: Wednesday June 26. 10am - 3pm. Fees: $100 per day includes supplies. Ages: 12+, Maximum enrollment of 7 campers for this camp.
July 10: Sandals or Pelt Pouch. Make a pair of custom fit sandals or a pelt pouch. Campers will design, cut leather, decorate, sew and sole their own sandals or make a pouch from fur or leather. Date: Wednesday, July 10. 10am - 3pm. Fees: $115 per day includes supplies. Ages: 7+, Maximum enrollment of 7 campers for this camp.
July 17: Gourd Bowls: Gourds have been used worldwide for centuries to carry water and food, store seeds, and create musical instruments and religious objects. In this camp, campers will cut, clean, sand, and drill holes to make their own bowl, flask or bird house. Depending upon skill level they may sew pine needles to the rim or decorate the bowl with a wood burner and dyes. Date: Wednesday July 24. 10am - 3pm. Fees: $100 per day includes supplies. Ages: 7+ Maximum enrollment of 7 campers for this camp.
July 31: Dye a Rainbow…Naturally! Campers will harvest and work with 4-8 different dyestuffs such as wood shavings, fresh plant material, dried plant material, insects and roots to create their very own rainbow of colored silks. Each camper will go home with 4 different colored silks. Date: Wednesday, July 31. 10am - 3pm. Fees: $100 per day includes supplies. Ages: 7+, Maximum enrollment of 7 campers for this camp.
August 7: Wax Tablets. In this camp, campers will make their very own tablets…not an ordinary computer tablet. The tablets we make never need to be plugged in nor will water won’t ruin them. We will make a wax tablet just like the ones that were by ancient Greeks for everything from art to record keeping. Date: Wednesday, August 7. 10am - 3pm Fees: $100 per day includes supplies. Ages: 7+, Maximum enrollment of 7 campers for this camp.
August 14: Blackberries All Day. Campers will spend the day discovering the many uses of blackberries. We will harvest in the morning and depending upon how many blackberries we harvest, we will make pie, jam, syrup, tea, ink, dye, prints, fish hooks and cordage. Date: Wednesday, August 14. 10am - 3pm. Fees: $100 per day includes supplies. Ages: 7+ Maximum enrollment of 7 campers for this camp.
