INTERN for Spring 2024

1st GRADE INSTRUCTOR for 2024-2025

We are seeking a mentor who enjoy being a positive role model for children, who leads by example with the Earth in mind, and who has a strong desire to engage children with their environment through a hands-on approach.

This position is for a 1st grade instructor to teach Waldorf-Style lesson. Our instructors are responsible for creating and leading activities for our students based upon our nature and academic focuses of the year. We provide quite a bit of guidance as to what to teach but also we also encourage our staff to take the initiative to make the delivery of concepts resonate with our students.

We are looking for creative, forward thinking, and motivated individuals to grow and expand with our organization.

Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 8:30am -3:30pm plus a Thursday Staff Meeting TBD and Special Event Participation at 3 events per year

Salary: Negotiable based on experience. The pay period is bi-monthly for the duration of 10 months (September - June). Pay is issued by check or electronic funds transfer.

Location: Our program is entirely outdoors in Nevada City.

Qualifications: Ideal Candidates have most of the following attributes:

  • Experience working with and leading groups of children ages 7-15 years of age

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Comfortable sitting on the ground, swimming in the ocean and creeks, and getting dirty

  • Comfortable handling insects and other small creatures

  • Interested in further growth in naturalist studies and mentoring

  • A nurturing, loving, creative and positive attitude

  • Dedicated to developmentally appropriate practice and aware of developmental needs of young children

  • Observant and communicative

  • A strong team member

  • Experience in elementary or middle school education

  • Experience with outdoor/nature based mentoring

  • Some knowledge of local flora and fauna

  • Familiarity and/or experience with place-based education, ecological literacy, project-based learning, and child-led learning

  • Experience with ancestral and primitive skills

  • Physically fit, able to crouch, dig, climb, hike, and carry up to 40lbs

  • Have reliable transportation (public transit is not near all of our locations)

  • A working cell phone

  • Ability to pass criminal records check

  • CPR and Pediatric First Aid Certified or willing to obtain such

  • Experience and access to a computer
